Pond Architecture: The Missing Discipline Between Landscape, Water, and Architecture

Pond Architecture is the practice of designing living water environments where water, landscape, architecture, ecology, engineering, and human experience are treated as a single system.

We possess a deep understanding of the relation between water and architecture, delivering creative vision and technical precision. Often experienced as a feeling rather than noticed as a feature, water has the power to shape atmosphere, connect architecture with nature, and bring landscape to life.

We work at every scale, from intimate courtyard ponds to expansive environments, considering every detail from concept to completion.

Blurring the Lines Between Land and Water

Water has traditionally occupied a defined role within the built environment. It is contained, bordered, and treated as a visual element separate from the landscape that surrounds it.
Yet in natural systems, no such distinction exists.

The edge between land and water is often a zone of transition, where geology, vegetation, light, and ecological processes interact continuously. Some of the most compelling environments emerge from these relationships rather than from clear separation.
Our work frequently explores this condition.

By carefully considering the surrounding landscape, material transitions, and ecological context, we seek opportunities to create a sense of continuity between terrestrial and aquatic environments. In these settings, water becomes less of an object within the landscape and more of a participant in it.

However, integration is not always the objective.

There are situations where a deliberate distinction between land and water creates a stronger spatial experience. A raised pond, a precisely defined edge, a reflective water court, or a carefully proportioned architectural basin can derive much of its character from clarity rather than concealment. The geometry of the water body may be intentionally expressed. The edge may become a place to gather, sit, observe, or engage directly with the water.
We appreciate the beauty of these moments equally.

For us, the question is never whether a boundary should disappear or remain visible. The question is what the site, the architecture, and the intended experience require.
Some projects call for water to dissolve into the landscape. Others call for water to be framed, celebrated, and clearly defined. Both approaches possess their own logic, beauty, and purpose.

Our role is to understand these relationships and develop environments where land, water, architecture, and ecology exist in meaningful dialogue.

Whether the boundary is softened or sharpened, hidden or expressed, the objective remains the same: to create places that feel intentional, enduring, and deeply connected to their surroundings.
